Which IELTS Test Do You Need?

Choosing the correct test matters. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training share Listening and Speaking, but their Reading and Writing components differ. IELTS recommends Academic for many undergraduate/postgraduate study and professional registration purposes, while General Training is commonly used for migration, work and below-degree-level study contexts.

For many study & professional goals

IELTS Academic

IELTS Academic is designed for people planning to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level and for certain professional registration purposes.

  • University and higher-education applicants
  • Academic English preparation
  • Professional registration where IELTS is accepted
  • Academic Reading and Writing preparation
For many migration & work goals

IELTS General Training

General Training is designed for contexts including migration to English-speaking countries, work and study below degree level. citeturn0search0

  • Migration-related English requirements
  • Work-related English contexts
  • Below-degree-level study
  • General Training Reading and Writing preparation
Do not choose based only on the destination. Your university, employer, immigration pathway or professional regulator may specify a particular IELTS test, minimum overall band and minimum component scores. Verify the current requirement before booking your test.

IELTS Preparation: All Four Skills

IELTS is not simply a vocabulary test. Preparation needs to address the task format, language ability, timing and the assessment criteria for each component.

Listening

Practise following conversations and monologues, identifying details, understanding different accents and managing answer-sheet accuracy under time pressure.

Reading

Build skimming, scanning, detailed reading, question analysis, vocabulary-in-context and time-management skills for the Academic or General Training Reading test.

Writing

Learn how to analyse prompts, organise ideas, develop relevant responses and improve coherence, vocabulary and grammatical accuracy.

Speaking

Practise all three speaking parts, improve fluency and coherence, expand vocabulary, strengthen grammar and work on pronunciation and intelligibility.

IELTS Test Format

The official IELTS test has four sections. Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training, while Reading and Writing differ.

Section Time Questions / Tasks Preparation Focus
Listening About 30 minutes 4 parts, 40 questions Listening for detail, prediction, spelling and accuracy
Reading 60 minutes 3 sections, 40 questions Skimming, scanning, comprehension and time management
Writing 60 minutes 2 tasks Task response/achievement, organisation, vocabulary and grammar
Speaking 11–14 minutes 3 parts Fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation
Official format: IELTS reports scores on a 9-band scale. Listening and Reading each contain 40 questions, while Writing and Speaking are assessed using specific performance criteria.

IELTS Writing: What We Work On

Writing is often where learners lose marks because they know English but do not fully satisfy the task, organise their response effectively or control language accurately.

Academic Writing

  • Task 1: graphs, charts, tables and diagrams
  • Task 2: essays responding to a position, argument or problem
  • Clear overview and logical organisation
  • Relevant comparisons and supporting details
  • Academic/semi-formal written style
  • Grammar and vocabulary accuracy

Academic Task 1 requires at least 150 words; Task 2 requires at least 250 words. Task 2 carries greater weight in the Writing score.

General Training Writing

  • Task 1: letter responding to a situation
  • Task 2: essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem
  • Purpose, tone and audience
  • Logical paragraphing and development
  • Relevant examples and explanations
  • Grammar, vocabulary and coherence

General Training Task 1 requires at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250 words. Task 2 carries greater weight.

IELTS Speaking Preparation

Speaking is a live interaction with an examiner. Preparation should therefore include repeated speaking practice rather than only learning model answers.

Part 1: Interview

Practise answering questions about familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies and interests with natural, developed responses.

Part 2: Long Turn

Learn how to use the one-minute preparation period effectively, organise ideas and speak continuously on the task-card topic.

Part 3: Discussion

Develop the ability to explain opinions, compare ideas, justify views and discuss more abstract aspects of a topic.

Speaking assessment: IELTS Speaking is assessed using fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

Listening & Reading Strategy

Strong IELTS performance comes from combining English proficiency with the ability to process questions and information efficiently under test conditions.

Listening Strategy

  • Predict likely answers before listening
  • Follow the order of information
  • Recognise distractors and corrections
  • Listen for names, numbers and specific details
  • Practise spelling and singular/plural accuracy
  • Review mistakes after every practice test

Reading Strategy

  • Understand the question before searching the text
  • Use skimming to build an overall map
  • Scan strategically for key information
  • Identify paraphrases rather than matching words only
  • Control time across all sections
  • Analyse errors after timed practice

IELTS Band Score Preparation

Your target should be based on the actual requirement of your university, employer, immigration pathway or professional body—not simply on the highest score advertised by a coaching centre.

Target Band 5.5–6.0

Focus on building reliable sentence structures, everyday and academic vocabulary, comprehension accuracy and basic task-control skills.

Target Band 6.5–7.0

Work on response development, coherence, grammatical control, vocabulary range, reading accuracy and consistent speaking performance.

Target Band 7.5+

Higher targets require strong English ability combined with precise task fulfilment, sophisticated language control and consistent performance under timed conditions.

Important: These are preparation categories, not guaranteed score outcomes. IELTS states that exact raw-score conversions can vary slightly between test versions.

How Skillance IELTS Preparation Works

The aim is to identify your current level, understand your target and then practise the areas that are actually limiting your score.

1. Understand Your Goal

Identify whether you need Academic or General Training and confirm the required overall and component scores for your pathway.

2. Assess Your Current Level

Use diagnostic tasks to identify weaknesses in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking rather than assuming every learner needs the same preparation.

3. Build the Required Skills

Strengthen language ability and test techniques through guided lessons, exercises, speaking practice and writing feedback.

4. Timed Practice

Introduce time pressure progressively so you learn to manage the actual test conditions instead of only solving questions without a clock.

5. Mock Tests

Take full or sectional mock tests to measure consistency and identify remaining problem areas before the exam.

6. Review & Correct

Analyse mistakes, understand why they occurred and repeat the relevant task until the improvement becomes consistent.

IELTS Preparation FAQs

What is IELTS?

IELTS is an English-language proficiency test used for study, work, migration and other purposes. The test assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training?

It depends on your purpose and the requirement of the organisation or pathway. Academic is commonly used for higher education and certain professional-registration purposes, while General Training is used in contexts including migration, work and below-degree-level study. Verify your exact requirement before booking.

Is Listening the same in Academic and General Training?

Yes. IELTS states that Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training, while Reading and Writing differ.

How long is the IELTS test?

The IELTS Academic test is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes for the four components, with Listening, Reading and Writing taking approximately 30, 60 and 60 minutes respectively, and Speaking taking 11–14 minutes.

How is IELTS scored?

IELTS uses a 9-band scale, with results reported in whole and half bands. Listening and Reading contain 40 questions each, while Writing and Speaking are assessed using specific criteria.

Can you guarantee a 7 or 8 band score?

No responsible coaching provider should guarantee a specific IELTS score without controlling the candidate's performance on the actual test. Preparation can improve skills and test readiness, but the final result depends on the candidate's performance.

How long should I prepare for IELTS?

There is no universal preparation period. It depends on your current English level, target score, previous IELTS experience and available study time. A diagnostic assessment is more useful than choosing an arbitrary number of weeks.

Do you provide IELTS mock tests?

The preparation structure on this page includes timed practice and mock-test preparation. Current mock-test schedules and batch arrangements should be confirmed with Skillance.

Can I prepare for IELTS online?

Live online preparation can be discussed for learners who cannot attend the Ahmedabad centre. Current online batch availability should be confirmed with Skillance.
