Opportunity Card: Germany Job Search Route

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) can allow eligible third-country nationals to enter Germany for job search without already having a concrete qualified-employment offer.

Two Main Routes

  • Recognised German or foreign qualification route
  • Points-system route for eligible foreign qualifications
  • Financial means must be demonstrated
  • Specific documentary requirements apply

Language & Points

  • Points-system applicants generally need German A1 or English B2
  • Higher German levels can contribute additional points
  • Professional experience and age can contribute points
  • Other criteria may affect the total score
Current official guidance: The German government’s Make it in Germany portal states that the Opportunity Card can be obtained through a recognised-skilled-worker route or a points system. Under the points route, applicants generally need a state-recognised foreign academic degree or qualifying vocational qualification, German A1 or English B2, and at least six points.

Why German Language Skills Matter

Language requirements differ by visa type. Even where German is not legally required, it can materially improve your ability to study, work and settle in Germany.

PathwayGeneral official language positionWhat You Should Verify
Opportunity Card – points systemGerman A1 or English B2 as a basic requirementAccepted certificate, validity and your exact route
Vocational trainingGerman B1 is generally requiredTraining provider and profession-specific requirements
Recognition of foreign qualificationsGerman A2 is generally required for the relevant visaProfession and recognition authority requirements
StudyDepends on the programme; German-taught programmes often require German proficiencyUniversity admission and programme language requirement
Qualified work / EU Blue CardNo general legal German requirement for many routesEmployer, profession, recognition and individual pathway requirements
Official source: Make it in Germany currently lists German A1/English B2 for the Opportunity Card points system, B1 for vocational training, A2 for recognition-related visas, and no general legal German requirement for qualified-work and EU Blue Card routes. Other professional or institutional requirements can still apply.

Certificate warning: Do not assume that attendance at a language class automatically produces a visa-acceptable certificate. Germany's official guidance identifies recognised examination providers such as Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD and others depending on the purpose. Always verify the exact certificate requirement for your visa.

Germany Student Visa: Key Areas to Prepare

Student-visa preparation is more than filling out a form. Your admission, financial proof and supporting documentation need to fit together consistently.

University Admission

You generally need admission to a state-recognised higher-education institution for the study visa route.

Financial Proof

Current official guidance states that students must demonstrate sufficient funds. For 2026, the stated blocked-account amount is at least €11,904. Verify the amount and accepted proof immediately before applying.

Language

The language requirement depends on the programme. Some programmes require German, while English-taught programmes may have English requirements set by the institution.

Germany Language Course Visa

If your purpose is intensive German-language acquisition in Germany, the language-acquisition route has specific requirements.

Intensive Course Requirement

The official Make it in Germany guidance says the course should generally involve daily German lessons with at least 18 lessons per week. Evening and weekend courses alone are not sufficient for this route.

Duration & Finances

The language-acquisition visa/residence permit is issued for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of 12 months, and applicants must demonstrate sufficient means of subsistence. The official guidance also states that work of up to 20 hours per week is permitted during this period.

Purpose matters: If the German course is preparation for an already identified study or vocational-training pathway, a different visa category may be appropriate. The official German portal specifically warns applicants to choose the visa based on the actual purpose of stay.

Documents We Help You Organise

The exact checklist depends on the visa category and your individual case. This is a planning framework, not a substitute for the current official checklist.

  • Valid passport
  • Photographs where required
  • Application forms
  • Personal information consistency

Education & Career

  • Degrees and certificates
  • Transcripts where required
  • Employment evidence

Financial & Insurance

  • Financial proof appropriate to pathway

  • Funding-source consistency

Purpose Documents

  • University admission
  • Training contract
  • Employment offer/contract
  • Language-course admission

Do not use an old checklist blindly. The German Mission in India currently directs applicants to its National Visa information and Consular Services Portal. Requirements and procedures can change, so the current official checklist for your visa category must be treated as authoritative.

Official warning for applicants in India: The German Mission in India states that using an agent is not necessary, that forms and information are available free of charge, and that false information or false documents can result in refusal and potentially an entry ban. Any consultancy should therefore be used for support and organisation—not for bypassing official requirements.

Germany Visa Consultancy FAQs

Do I need a visa to go to Germany from India?

For long stays such as work, study or vocational training, Indian citizens generally need the appropriate German national visa before entering Germany. The exact requirement depends on nationality and purpose.

What is the Germany Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card is a job-search route for eligible third-country nationals. It can allow qualifying applicants to enter Germany to look for suitable employment. It is not mandatory for every route into Germany.

How much German do I need for the Opportunity Card?

For the points-system route, the basic language requirement is German A1 or English B2. Higher German proficiency can contribute additional points. Applicants with a recognised qualification who qualify as skilled workers may not need to provide language proof for the Opportunity Card itself, although German is recommended for the job search.

What German level is required for Ausbildung?

Official German government guidance states that German B1 is required for a vocational-training visa in general. A particular training programme or profession can impose additional requirements.

Can I get a Germany work visa without German?

Some qualified-work routes have no general legal German-language requirement. However, the actual job, profession, recognition process and employer may require German. Good German skills can also improve employment prospects.

How much money is required for a Germany student visa?

For 2026, the official Make it in Germany study guidance states that students can demonstrate living-cost funding through a blocked account with at least €11,904, a scholarship or a declaration of commitment. Verify the current requirement before applying.

Can a consultancy guarantee my Germany visa?

No. A consultancy cannot guarantee a visa decision. The competent German authorities assess the application. A responsible consultant should help you prepare a compliant application rather than promise approval.

Is a German language certificate from any institute accepted?

No. The official German government guidance lists recognised examination providers and warns that certificates from other services may not be recognised in visa procedures. Always verify the certificate requirement for your specific visa.

Can I apply for a Germany visa myself?

Yes. The German Mission in India explicitly states that it is not necessary to use an agent and that the official information and forms are free. A consultancy is optional support, not a requirement.
